Ombuds Work in Higher Education

In this guide, all aspects of ombuds work in higher education are discussed clearly and thoroughly, from the implementation and context of the ombuds function, the everyday practice of an ombudsman (m/f/x) to international differences in terms of the ombudsman's mandate and powers. How can ombudsmen carry out their work correctly and effectively? What kinds of complaints do they investigate? How do they deal with complainants and respondents? Should complaints of students and employees be handled differently? And how do ombudsmen maintain impartiality? This book is not only relevant to ombudsmen worldwide, but is also an insightful read for administrators, policy staff and potential users of the ombuds service. Lies Poesiat has worked as an ombudsman at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam since 2007. Prior to this, she held the position of ombudsman at the University of Amsterdam. Lies Poesiat served on the steering committee for the European Network for Ombuds in Higher Education (ENOHE) for many years, is co-founder and former chair of the Dutch Association of Higher Education Ombudsmen (VOHO) and gives lectures about her work both nationally and internationally.

A Future for Economics

The replication crisis is hotly debated in all disciplines across the social sciences. Economics is not an exception. However, economics is different from the other social sciences, due to an exceptionally dominant paradigmatic core and an equally dominant methodological backbone, known as neoclassical economics and econometrics, respectively. In this book, we argue how this double strength can be a double weakness, too. We emphasize that any future for economics will benefit from a reduced dominance of neoclassical economics, with its population of econs and orgecs, in combination with a fundamental renewal of many of current methodological practices, moving away from the dominance of null hypothesis statistical testing toward the direct battle among competing hypotheses. This requires a collective effort, by all stakeholders involved in the science of economics. Given vested interests, this is anything but easy. But if the beautiful discipline of economics succeeds in doing so, it will enter into a bright future. “It should be required reading for all economists.” - Campbell Harvey, Professor of International Business, Duke University / former President of the American Finance Association “Here is a very expected and salutary book that economists may not ignore. We can only collectively benefit from it.” - Marcus Dejardin, Professor of Economics at the University of Namur and UCLouvain “I highly recommend this book because it time and again shows how our discipline could move forward and become more scientific.” - Harry Garretsen, Professor of International Economics & Business, University of Groningen Hugh van der Mandele is a retired consulting economist and research collaborator at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Arjen van Witteloostuijn is Dean of the School of Business and Economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Anymals, Poems, Empathy

This study researches the intricate relationships between poems, empathy and anymals (a term chosen to highlight the diversity of nonhuman animals) in an effort to move beyond the traditional binaries of 'human vs animal', 'projection vs empathy' and 'text vs world'. This is done by analysing carefully selected 'zoopoems', poems in which anymals take part as protagonists, and exploring the poets' use of tools and techniques to confront traditional binaries. Through these zoopoetical tools, such as metaphors, questions and hesitations, rhythm and pronoun drop, human subjectivity is silenced, allowing the reader to see the anymals in a new perspective - as themselves. The study takes advantage of recent literary and zoopoetical investigations as undertaken by Eileen John, Marco Caracciolo and Kári Driscoll, and finds its roots in the philosophies of Simone Weil and Iris Murdoch. It not only lets the reader become acquainted or reacquainted with poets from the anglophone world, such as Elizabeth Bishop, Judith Beveridge and Les Murray, but also makes the Dutch zoopoetic tradition accessible to a wider audience through translations of zoopoems by Ida Gerhardt, M. Vasalis, Joke van Leeuwen, Frederike Harmsen van Beek, and Judith Herzberg. Tirza Brüggemann (Hoogblokland, 1975) studied Philosophy and English Language and Culture at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She teaches philosophy at Het Amsterdams Lyceum and works at Radboud University as a teacher of didactics of philosophy.

Wonder, Education, and Human Flourishing

The premise that underlies this volume is that there are strong interconnections between wonder, education, and human flourishing. And more specifically, that wonder can make a significant difference to how well one's education progresses and how well one's life goes. The contributors to this volume - both senior, well-known and beginning researchers and students of wonder - variously explore aspects of these connections from philosofphical, empirical, theoretical and practical perspectives. The three chapters that comprise Part I of the book are devoted to the importance of wonder for education and for human flourishing. Part II contains four chapters offering conceptual analyses of wonder and perspectives from developmental psychology and philosophy (Spinoza, Wittgenstein, philosophy of religion). The seven chapters that form part III contain a wealth of ideas and educational strategies to promote wonder in education and teacher education. This volume not only underlines and articulates the importance of wonder in education and in life but also offers fresh perspectives, allowing us to look with renewerd wonder at wonder itself. Anders Schinkel (1979) is Associate Professor of Philosophy of Education at the Department of Educational and Family Studies, Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences, VU Amsterdam.

Applied Intersectionality in International Human Rights Law Implementation

The multiple disadvantages faced by women migrant workers reflect complex and layered socio-legal problems. This research aims to develop a systemic set of legal recommendations for improving the Chinese domestic legal system to ensure effective legal protection of female migrant domestic workers' fundamental human rights and their right to decent working conditions. In this study, intersectionality theory is applied to display the overlapping forms of disadvantage faced by the vulnerable. The implications of existing international human rights treaties and international labour conventions are analysed in an effort to generate recommendations for improving China's domestic laws relating to Hukou reform, discrimination elimination and working conditions. As such this study can be seen as a crucial first step in designing a contextually sensitive approach aimed at solving concrete problems in a concrete social setting. “For human rights studies to remain a relevant field of study for generations to come, it should invest in inclusivity, an interdisciplinary approach, and a problem-solving angle. Peng's book does exactly that and, therefore, it is an asset to the field. Consequently, it deserves the widest audience possible.” Tom Zwart, Professor of Cross-cultural Law Utrecht University “I am positive that more research of this kind that combines international outlook and renovated theories in solving down-to-earth problems can truly promote realization of human rights across different cultures and countries.” Wan Exiang, Professor of International Law Wuhan University Institute of International Law Qinxuan Peng (1987) is Associate Research Professor at Wuhan University Institute of International Law (Wuhan University), Senior Researcher at the Cross-Culture Human Rights Centre (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) and editor of Wuhan University International Law Review. My Soul Doth Magnify

There is a popular practice of Anglican choral evensong in the Netherlands outside the context of the Anglican Church. Dutch choirs perform the Anglican 'daily prayer' liturgy: with preces and responses, psalms, canticles, hymns and an anthem, as well as lessons and spoken prayers. Choral evensong attracts many people: believers (of all denominations), ex-believers and non-believers. This paradox, the popularity of choral evensong in a so-called secularized country such as the Netherlands, attracts attention and raises questions. What exactly is going on here? Why is choral evensong so popular in contemporary society? The central topic of the research presented in this volume is the appropriation of Anglican choral evensong within the Dutch context in relation to religious dynamics in Dutch culture. Dr Hanna Rijken (theologian and musician) is a postdoctoral researcher at the Protestant Theological University in Amsterdam. She also teaches Liturgical Studies at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music (Codarts). She is initiator and artistic leader of the 'Vocaal Theologen Ensemble' and initiator of the ecumenical Choral Evensong & Pub in Utrecht. 'In this remarkable, ground-breaking and important work, Hanna Rijken expertly guides us through the fascinating and paradoxical phenomenon of the rise in popularity and appropriation of Anglican Choral Evensong in the Netherlands since the 1980s. Dr Rijken is uniquely qualified in this ethnographic task, as a musician, minister and scholar. The result is not only a rigorously researched thesis but also an accessible and enjoyable exploration of how, in a 'post-secular' country, the beauty, sacrality, rituality and, of course, music of Choral Evensong appeal to a wide sector of society, including atheists, agnostics and believers, that seeks this transcendental and transformative experience. This is a wonderful book for our age.' Revd Dr Jonathan Arnold, Director of Communities and Partnerships, Diocese of Canterbury, UK. Author of Sacred Music in Secular Society (2014) and Music and Faith: Conversations in a Post-Secular Age (2019). Dr Arnold has been Dean of Divinity and a Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford.

The Basics of Money and Banking

The Basics of Money and Banking is an accessible textbook for bachelor students of a number of disciplines. It can also be an invaluable resource for professionals who wish to master the language and principles of money and banking. This book covers monetary issues, including money creation and the role that commercial banks play in creating bank deposits. It addresses the important role of banks in financial intermediation, and explains these concepts in the context of historical developments, inviting readers to think about what might be next. The start of the 21st century has not only brought us advances in globalization and the internet and the introduction of the euro, but has also seen challenges to major assumptions underlying economic thinking from the works of Kahneman & Tversky and many other scholars. The devastating effect of short-term thinking culminated in the global financial crisis from 2007/2008 onwards. The social and environmental impact of money has entered debates on finance and banking, resulting in much more attention for non-monetary values in banking. Fintech and cryptos have forced mainstream finance to consider the impact of money on people, and central banks to rethink their role in the financial system. This book serves this broader perspective, while explaining the main concepts in detail. It discusses alternative concepts, such as Islamic Finance, Full Reserve Banking and Central Bank Digital Currency. The book starts from scratch and guides readers towards a level where they can develop their own views on financial regulation or monetary policy in the context of today's challenges, both at global level and in local communities. Prof. dr. Wim Boonstra is Endowed Professor of Economic and Monetary Policy at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. He is also former chief economist of Rabobank. He is still working with Rabobank Research as special economic advisor. His publications cover topics such as European integration, international economics, monetary systems and cooperative banking. Dr. Linda van Goor is an independent advisor for European regulatory affairs in the financial sector. She has a strong background in the banking sector, the supervisory authorities and the European Commission. She draws on this experience to support policy makers towards finding a balance in financial regulation which seeks to do justice to every stakeholder and ensure a stable financial system serving a sustainable economy.

The Burden of Nationality

On 20 October 1944, anticipating the end of the Second World War, the Dutch government-in-exile in London promulgated het Besluit Vijandelijk Vermogen ('the Decree on Enemy Property'). The Decree classed al nationals of Germany, Italy and Japan as enemies of the state, or vijandelijke onderdanen ('enemy citizens'), and entitled the Dutch State to confiscate all assets belonging to enemy citizens within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Thousands of German civilians who resided and worked in the Netherlands were stripped of their assets, regardless of their place of residence or political allegiance and without any Dutch compensation. Some were arrested, imprisoned or expelled, whereas others left the Netherlands of their own accord. Even German Jewish refugees, who had been deprived of their German citizenship by the Nazis, were treated as enemy citizens. Many tried to appeal their status of enemy citizen by submitting a request for an ontvijandingsverklaring ('declaration of de-enemisation'), with the hope of gaining their rights and assets back. Offering a multi-faceted overview of the history of German enemy citizens by highlighting the different actors, stakeholders and institutions that defined, implemented or challenged the Decree on Enemy Property, The Burden of Nationality sheds light on a forgotten page in the book of Dutch post-war history. It examines the categorical classification of Germans as enemy citizens in the aftermath of the Second World War and analyses how in times of conflict, post-conflict and transition notions of citizenship are key criteria for solving quandaries of identity and nationality. Interviews with children and grandchildren of former enemy citizens highlight how the effects of enemy status impacted generations. As this study shows, the question of how the politics of citizenship informed the treatment of German nationals illuminates a fundamental dilemma and a deep ambiguity regarding what makes someone a Dutch citizen. Marieke Oprel (1990) is an interdisciplinary historian, lecturer and organiser. She studied political and cultural history at Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam. Her dissertation research on German enemy citizens in the Netherlands in the aftermath of the Second World War, which resulted in The Burden of Nationality, was funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Full details on her CV and publications can be found on www.mariekeoprel.nl.
