The Nokia Lumia 1020 did allow me to browse it’s contents for almost year with the use of the original data cable that came with the Nokia Lumia 1020.

All of the sudden Windows 7 64 bit didn’t allow me to browse my smart phone anymore if I plug in the data cable. The phone however does charge when the data cable is attached to the computer and also when its attached to a normal wall socket.

And while I was looking for a solution I came across many sites that offered me a software download that scanned my drivers and after everything was scanned I need to pay in order to install the correct drivers.

And according to the reviews of the software it also didn’t fix the problem at all.

I don’t like to spend money and time on something like a driver that used to be on my pc but disappeared for some reason that I don’t understand. The solution for the problem should be free and easy to find.

Because it wasn’t easy to find, I decided to write this article – to help you find the solution of the problem right way. Without having to search the internet for a couple of hours to find the right solution.

I do have another laptop, a Samsung Windows 7 laptop. It was upstairs and I haven’t used it for a while. But since I had problems with my HP laptop I brought this laptop downstairs.

And on this laptop I can plug in my Nokia Lumia 1020 and I can browse all items on it with the data cable attached. I didn’t install any Windows updates with this laptop before I started working with it.

Because of all this I did make a backup of all the files on my HP laptop. My HP laptop was getting more and more unstable (I think because of Windows updates). After a while it started up with system recovery.

I decided to do a full system restore to fabric settings. And after that my HP laptop is fast and stabile again, and I can use the Nokia Lumia data cable now on my HP laptop again, to browse items on my laptop.

Access your Nokia Lumia 1020 with the use of your Wifi Connection

I found an app called Easy Transfer. Easy Transfer is an app that you install on your Windows Phone. In this case the Nokia Lumia 1020. With the app you can transfer photos, videos and video from your phone to your pc and from your pc to your phone. The app also allows you to delete files from your phone when you access the app on your pc with the use of the IP address that the app shows. You need to open your browser and fill in the IP address that the app shows when you open it.

You need to keep the app page open on your phone if you want to keep on transferring files. So you can’t use your phone while you are transferring a file to your pc.

You can play music and video from your phone directly in your pc instead of using the smaller screen of the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Send over data with the use of Bluetooth

If you want to share your data over Bluetooth you need to have hardware that is already compatible with Bluetooth or you should buy a Bluetooth dongle. If your hardware is compatible, for example if you have a Smart TV with Bluetooth you could share your photos, videos and music from your phone on your smart tv.

If you want to use Bluetooth on the Nokia Lumia 1020 you need to turn on Bluetooth on your device first. To do that tap ALL SETTINGS> Blue Tooth, and switch the status to on.

  • If you want to send content tap in the right corner under the content, tap on …
  • after that tap share > Bluetooth
  • Tap the device you want to connect to.
  • If the device needs a pass code to connect you need to fill in the same pass code in both devices

But there is no real need for a Bluetooth dongle, if you can also use wifi and the Share it App

How To Use the Share It App to share files on your windows phone

Share It is a application which allows you to transfer files to another device in seconds.

You just have to install the Share It app to your phone and after that you can share content with devices that have this app installed. You don’t have to go to a certain IP address (like in the Easy Transfer app) to be able to browse your files and to be able to download or upload files. I personally think the SHARE It app works a lot faster than the Easy Transfer app.

But it depends on what you prefer, I do have both apps installed on my phone

Share it s very easy to use, you only need to select either “send” or “receive” to share content with another device.

  • If you want to send content tap in the right corner under the content, tap on …
  • after that tap share > Share It
  • Tap the device you want to connect to (in this case your pc) .

If you want to share files with your Windows 7 pc you have to install the desktop version of Share It on your pc. If Share It doesn’t find your pc after tapping the image you should choose use the lan option.

How to fix: Windows Media Player 12 when it is giving you errors

If your Windows Media Player stopped working you can’t open any media types anymore. You should install a new media player if this happens or try to get Windows Media Player to Work again. If you want Windows Media Player to work again follow the following steps:

Uninstall Windows Media Player in Windows 7

Step 1: Click the start button after that click Control Panel. Click on Programs and Features

Step 2: Click on Turn Windows Features On or Off

Step 3. Click the plus symbol next to the Media Features folder

Step 3. Look for the Windows Media Player entry and uncheck the box next to it.

Step 4: Restart Windows

Reinstall Windows Media Player in Windows 7

Step 1: Click the start button after that click Control Panel. Click on Programs and Features

Step 2: Click on Turn Windows Features On or Off

Step 3. Click the plus symbol next to the Media Features folder

Step 3. Look for the Windows Media Player entry and check the box next to it.

Step 4: Restart Windows

If Windows Media Player doesn’t install anymore you can do a repair with your Windows 7 disk or use a system restore to a point on which Windows Media Player was working.

In my case I did a full system restore to fabric settings. Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center now are working again. And I can use the data cable again to browse the items on my Nokia Lumia 1020.

It’s easier to restore and install all the software again than to fix an unstable Windows system with a growing amount of problems. I’m also now exploring my external hard drive and reorganize it. So that in the future I have all files needed for the Windows restore which enables me to install all the software I want on my system in no time.

So that I only need to click and install. The restore of the Windows 7 laptop went pretty quickly (compared to the Windows XP restores I’m used to in the past) and I only needed to fill in my SSID to be able to go on the internet again (and download software). I didn’t need to fill in the DSN just like on old pc’s. If I would know it would took me this fast I would have done this before.

If your system is unstable and is giving you many problems it is a good idea to make a backup of important files on your system before you do full system restore.

Examples of Important files:

  • Documents
  • Electronic Tickets and vouchers that are still valid
  • License codes
  • Music
  • Passwords you have saved to use on programs and websites
  • Photos and other pictures
  • SSID code
  • Software, Freeware and Shareware that your want to keep
  • Videos

And after that do a fresh install of your Windows installation just like I did. Sometimes starting over again fixes all of your problems.

Mediamonkey as an alternative for Windows Media Player

If the lack of Windows Player is the only problem your system is suffering and your Windows installation is stable you could use Mediamonkey as an alternative for Windows Media Player.

It’s one of the best free mediaplayers. Mediamonkey offers you tabbed playlists. You can easily change the look of Mediamonkey to suit your preferences.

From Ventis Media:

MediaMonkey is the media manager for serious collectors. It catalogs audio and video files, whether they're located on a hard drive or network, dividing them into different 'collections' (e.g. contemporary, classical music, audiobooks, home movies, tv, videos, etc).

It looks up and tags Album Art and data via Freedb and the web, includes an automatic renamer to rename and organize files, and a playlist manager to arrange your mixes.
